“I photograph to help others see what I see.”
Rick Poston is a Minneapolis-based photographer with deep ties to New York City, where he lived and photographed for twelve years.
His photographic journey began in the mid-1980s while planning a trip to Colorado; wanting to capture the grandeur of the Rockies, he purchased his first 35mm camera. Once in Colorado, however, he found himself most drawn to the people he encountered—clerks in shops, passersby, individuals immersed in daily life. It was the human encounters that truly captivated him, and the ability to capture a moment and preserve the emotion it evoked—a conversation, if only in his lens and imagination.
That impulse continues to motivate his work as he explores light, shadow, contrast, form, and the tension between what is seen and what is implied or imagined.
Rick photographs to capture moments of connection—whether in the studio, on the street, or among natural or architectural forms. His images reflect an exchange—sometimes spoken, often imagined—between photographer and subject. Playful, serious, dramatic, or moody, his work is always in pursuit of emotional resonance and atmospheric depth.
If a viewer feels moved, intrigued, inspired, or challenged by one of his photographs, he considers that his highest reward.
Rick generally works in 35mm.
